Research Background:
Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), a naturally occurring melanocortin peptide. Its structure includes a lactam bridge between aspartic acid and lysine residues, along with norleucine and D-phenylalanine substitutions, which confer conformational constraint and resistance to enzymatic degradation. Preclinical and in vitro research has investigated its non-selective agonist activity across the melanocortin receptor family, including MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, and MC5R, and the downstream cAMP signaling that follows receptor activation. Laboratory studies have used it as a reference compound in melanocortin pharmacology, including work on central melanocortin pathways in animal models.
