Research Background:
Melanotan I is a synthetic 13-amino-acid linear analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), a naturally occurring melanocortin peptide. Its sequence includes a norleucine substitution at position 4 and a D-phenylalanine substitution at position 7, which confer enhanced potency and resistance to enzymatic degradation relative to the native hormone. Preclinical and in vitro research has investigated its activity at the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), including downstream cAMP signaling and melanocyte biology in cell culture models. Laboratory studies have also examined its receptor selectivity across the melanocortin receptor family and its use as a reference compound in melanocortin pharmacology.
